christmas craziness.

Our Christmas consisted of lots of presents, a wonderful church meeting, lots of fun family time, and then sadly lots of puking on my, Paisley's, Porter's, and Blake's everyone's part. Out of 11 people in the home, 10 of us got the 24 hour stomach flu. Luckily Lily didn't get it, just a cold and an ear infection. Yipee.

I got Cole a remote control airplane that he's been loving, and I got a Cricut Expression, which I'm super excited about! I also got a Kindle from my mom and a trip to HARRY POTTER WORLD from my dad and stepmom. Beyond excited! Here are some pictures, pre-sickness:

Cole said it looks like Lily's sporting a gorilla's a reindeer, for the record

9 months.

Nine months ago this happened:

IMG_0085 - Version 2

Nine months before that this happened:

And every day in between and after that has been pretty much amazing, humbling, and wonderful!

  • is 16 lbs. 11 oz. (10-15th%), 28 inches long (50th%), and 17.5 head circ. (50th%). She's a skinny minny, but very healthy the doc says.
  • is pulling herself up on things, especially loves to crawl on Cole and I
  • yells a lot, and says "ba ba," "da da," "ma ma" and sometimes "mom" and "dad," but I think that may be a coincidence
  • LOVES her Gerber veggie crunchies. I'm pretty sure she'd down a whole can in about 1o min. if we let her (which we don't!)
  • still an army crawling champ and doesn't seem interested in getting up on her hands and knees
  • has a twinkly little smile and the cutest giggle
  • tries to shove things into Cole's mouth
  • bobs her head up and down and moves her legs like she's dancing
  • waves hello and good-bye
  • takes two naps for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours
  • has two sharp bottom teeth
We love her more than we can say.

Harry Potter Party, Part II

Let the dorkiness continue...

Thank you so much, Ashton, for an amazing and hilarious HP-style photo booth:

The Order of the Phoenix

Ashton + Becca won Best Costume for Profs. Lupin + Trelawney

The Henrys as Luna Lovegood + Neville Longbottom took 2nd!

The Orrocks as Bellatrix Lestrange + Lucius Malfoy. So awesome! I'm lovin' the fishnets.

The Jubers (who have never read nor watched the movies) fittingly came as Hermione's parents

The Bentons as house elves

Me and my twin as Moaning Myrtle + Cho Chang. Thanks for being die hard with me, Jill :)

I wish we had still shots of everybody. Thanks to everyone for coming, having so much fun with your costumes, and providing food, drinks, and decorations for the party. Basically, thanks for being Harry Potter nerds with us! We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

"Born to be our Friend"

December already! What?! That is how I'm feeling - like we've been running a million miles an hour since November. I have about three or four blog posts until I'm "caught up" on what's been going on lately. If you're feeling the same way, stop a second and watch this video. It's a beautiful reminder of what this season is really all about. You can see more videos about the Savior's life here.

For some reason it has struck me that Jesus Christ was once a baby and a child. Maybe it's because I have a sweet little babe of my own now, but it softens my heart to know that Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, chose to arrive on this earth as a helpless infant, and that he had to grow and learn just like we do. He experienced scrapes and bruises like any other child; He experiences joy and sorrow just like we do, and He later experienced pain of every kind and bore a weight that we could not carry ourselves. What immense strength it must have taken to live a perfect life and bear the burdens of all people throughout eternity while experiencing the weaknesses of the human condition. What immense love! I'm grateful, especially at this time of year, for a willing, loving Savior who knows me and you perfectly because He is like us, and because He atoned for us. I love Him and this season that turns our thoughts towards Him!

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Harry Potter Party, Part I

In mid-November, Jill and I threw a Harry Potter party. It was epic. I'll include some of the info we used just in case you're curious, and because we scoured the Internet to find it all so maybe someone else won't have to.

I made the brick wall with a sponge and muslin. This is a helpful tutorial, but I didn't go into as much detail. We hung it with nails.

The sign I made using Mod Podge, gold paint, and a 9 3/4 printout found here

Honeydukes labels came from here as well as the fonts. I used GIMP, a free Photoshop-like software, and Word to customize them.

The Goblet of Fire (costume contest) + broom favor bags made by Jill

Potions-making may have been my favorite part.
For most labels I purchased templates from here
then customized them using GIMP. On a few others, I found pre-made labels on blogs/Google searches.

Jill and I made the floating candles with toilet paper rolls, masking tape, hot glue guns, and battery-operated tea lights. This is a helpful tutorial.

sneak peek!

It has been insane around here the last few weeks. Jill and I have been planning and executing the Harry Potter party of our dreams. Pictures and a post to follow. Today Lily and I are off to Pennsylvania for the first time together. In the midst of our chaotic October/November, Cole and I somehow managed to get family pictures. Our friend and big-time pro photographer, Ashton, took them. We absolutely love them! Here's a sneak peek:

There will be more when I get a second to catch my breath.

cardigan weather.

It's a pleasantly cool 70 degrees, and at night it even dips into the 50's. Fall has finally come to Texas! We've been celebrating by wearing jeans, cardigans, visiting a pumpkin patch, and eating pumpkin cookies. I absolutely love fall even if the trees here are green and still have all their leaves.

Happy Fall!

27 Years of Awesome! aka Cole's Birthday

Twenty-seven years ago (on the 16th) my hunk o' burnin' love was born! The world is a much more joyous place because of it. Cole's major contributions to the world thusfar:
  • He is funny, positive, and has such an infectious smile. He cracks me up and makes life a lot happier.
  • He's got a rockin' bod....just saying.
  • He's a great leader and hard worker and keeps our family toeing the line.
  • He does some killer magic tricks and impressions.
  • He's an amazing Dad.
  • He is talented and is pretty awesome at most everything (yep, one of those kinds of people)
To celebrate Cole's awesomeness, we got a babysitter (thank you Rupps) and went out to eat at Ruth's Chris. Delicious! On Sunday, I made Cole orange chicken to pay homage to our joint love of Panda Express and we had friends over for homemade cake and ice cream. It was a great weekend.

I love this picture (thanks Quin for taking it!)

Honey, you rock and I love you. I am so glad you were born!

7 months.

So far 7 months is kicking my butt. Lily's been army crawling for quite a few weeks, but just this week she's discovered she can go fast and her curiosity has taken me by surprise. I can hardly keep up. I've survived on a steady diet of Coca-Cola to keep me going, but gosh darn if I'm not pooped. At 7 months she:
  • weighs 15 lbs. 11 oz.
  • measures 26.5 inches long
  • army crawls like she's on a mission
  • can pick up small objects with her fingers (like the nasties on my floor, eek!)
  • likes to pat things with her hands and will copy us if we do it
  • sleeps through the night 7/7:30 to 7 a.m. straight. Hallelujah!
  • stretches out on her side like she's posing (see picture below)
  • says "Da da da" usually just like that--3 "da's"
  • unabashedly stares at people and will crane her neck or tilt her head to keep looking at them. This cracks me up.
  • has got some Stranger Danger issues and separation anxiety when we go out of sight...we're workin' on it.
  • has started taking baths in the big tub with me. It's one of our favorite things.
We love love love this girl!

just because.

Just because I love this girl.
Just because I'm a little bored.
Just because I think she's the cutest.
Just because this is all we've been up to.
Just because cups on our head are the coolest. The end.

look mom, a tongue!

Lily's oral antics have changed in the last few days from sucking on everything to licking everything. She'll lock something in her sights and army crawl to it with her tongue out, ready for a taste. She's fascinated by it and sticks it in and out of her mouth like a little lizard. Here's a collage from earlier today. I know all the pictures look the same, but I was trying to demonstrate just how frequently it hangs out of her mouth...which is a lot.

(my favorites are the middle bottom and the right center)

Let's just hope this doesn't last into high school.

slightly obsessed.

So these are some of my obsessions as of late:

1. This TV show:

I watched it once and laughed out loud all by myself. Then I made Cole watch it with me, and we both laughed out loud together. You must watch!

2. This talk by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf that he gave at the General Relief Society broadcast for our church. Here's a quote:

Sisters, wherever you are, whatever the circumstances may be, you are not forgotten. No matter how dark your days may seem, no matter how insignificant you may feel, no matter how overshadowed you think you may be, your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. In fact, He loves you, with an infinite love.

I could feel Pres. Uchtdorf's love and Heavenly Father's love for me and for all the women around me. I cannot wait until General Conference this weekend!

3. The new J. Crew catalog.

4. And last but not least, my loves:

I simply can't get enough of these two.

6 months.

The last 6 months have been the most joyous of my life for one very simple reason--I get to be this little beauty's mama!

  • rocks on her hands and knees and scoots around on her stomach
  • LOVES solid food. She's eaten carrots, apples, butternut squash, banana, and green beans. She loves them all.
  • drinks water from a sippy cup
  • has started to launch herself out of her Bumbo (scary!)
  • can sit up on her own
  • has a cheery disposition and loves to watch and interact with people
  • has found her feet. She likes to hold them and take a nibble every now and then
At her 6 month appointment she weighed 14 lbs. 12 oz (45%). Her head circ. was 17 inches (60%), and she measured 26 inches long (50%).
We love this girl so so much. Happy 6 months to our Lils!

Lily and I are not feelin' so hot today. A slight cold for me and side effects of a flu shot for Lily mean there's been lots of crying from Lily, lots of rocking from me; lots of sleeping from Lily (7:30 pm-7 am completely uninterrupted. A-mazing!) and lots of movie-watching from me--the new Jane Eyre and X-Men: First Class. I have a bit of a Michael Fassbender crush at the moment.

Lots of liquids and lots of cuddling are just what the doctor ordered, I think. In the meantime, here's a recent picture of my six month old. I just can't believe she's six months already. A milestone post will be coming soon.

happy times in Austin.

On Labor Day we headed up to Austin with family. We people-watched, strolled in and out of the fun shops, and sampled some of SoCo's finest food -Enoteca Vespaio and Hey Cupcake! The wait for South Congress Cafe was too long and Flip Happy Crepes was closed, but at least we have an excuse to go again. We visited the Capitol, but missed the LBJ Library. I loved the vibe there and can't wait to go back!
